The most affordable way to fence a pool, and it comes down in minutes when you want the open look.
A mesh pool safety fence uses aluminum poles that slide into small sleeves drilled into your deck. The mesh is tight, see-through and hard for small children to climb. When the grandkids go home, or for a party with only adults, sections lift out and the sleeves get flush caps.
The 2024 ISPSC allows mesh safety fences that meet ASTM F2286 and are installed to the manufacturer's instructions. It also says hinged gates in a mesh fence must meet the gate rules, mesh fences can't be mounted on top of on-ground (above-ground) pools, and the inside of a mesh fence must be at least 20 inches from the water's edge. Southern Nevada adds the 60-inch height for homes. Ask for 5 ft mesh, and ask the building department how it reviews mesh fences if this is for a new pool permit.
UV is hard on any fabric. Ask about UV-stabilized mesh and the warranty on fading, keep the mesh tight, and plan to replace panels eventually. See mesh panel repair.
Many mesh systems come with a walk-through section that you unlatch by hand. If you want a hinged gate that closes and latches on its own, ask for a self-closing mesh gate and check the latch height. More on pool gates.

Installing sleeves means drilling small holes into the deck. When the fence is down, the holes get flush caps. An experienced installer will plan hole locations carefully.
It depends on the product and exposure. UV-stabilized mesh lasts longer, and individual panels can be replaced without redoing the whole fence.
The 2024 ISPSC says the inside of a mesh fence must be at least 20 inches from the water's edge.
